Quercus ilicifolia (Scrub Oak)

A small to medium-sized deciduous tree notable for its holly-like leaves with spiny margins, adapting well to diverse habitats across eastern North America. Its bark is smooth and gray when young, gradually developing shallow fissures and becoming darker with age. This small to medium-sized tree typically forms a rounded crown, making it recognizable in diverse forest and woodland habitats.

  • Soil: Dry, upland forests, rocky ridges, sandy/gravelly soils

 

Acorns provide a food source for turkey, rough grouse, songbirds, deer, and small mammals.
