Yellowbud Hickory (Carya cordiformis)

$26.00

Yellowbud hickory has the widest distribution of all walnut family trees in North America.  An exceptionally climate resilient crop: high drought tolerance, can thrive in flood zones, and its leaves and flowers are frost tolerant.

Zone: 3-9 (The hardiest of all hickories)

Form: Columnar

Soil: From dry, acidic ridges to moist, neutral floodplains, Yellowbud seems to be at home in a wide spectrum of contexts.

” Indigenous peoples across the eastern United States have been utilizing Yellowbud for thousands of years. Traditionally, the nuts are ground, shell and all, into a paste which is then boiled and the oil is skimmed from the top. This process is done with many different species of hickory. The Algonquian word for the delicious oily milk, typically made from shagbark, is “pawcohiccora” and is known as the origin for “hickory”. Unfortunately, the wisdom surrounding this precious food resource has been drowned by the forces of colonialism and is a large reason why it is still undervalued today. ” Find out more here: https://www.yellowbud.farm/learn
