Also called rock oak, it is commonly found on rocky slopes and upland areas. The trunk tends to be straight and almost uniformly wide. Leaves are large and a shiny dark green. It is often found growing in poor, dry and rocky soils but does best in well-drained loams, drought tolerant once established.

Growing Conditions
Acorns provide a food source for turkey, rough grouse, songbirds, deer, and small mammals.
